Employees are looking for regular feedback, authentic connections and a more collaborative relationship with their managers. As a result, coaching is getting a lot of attention as a way to unlock this connection and boost employee performance. But while it seems that everyone knows and talks about the importance of coaching and mentions that there should be more of it in their organization, many of these efforts still struggle to consistently translate good intentions into activity and noble goals into measurable behavior.

A great deal of emphasis is given to the “coaching conversations” between a manager and his/her direct report, and rightly so. They are fundamental to establishing a culture of engagement and productivity. Not all companies innovate in the same way and the same can be said for HR organizations.  Often, innovation is driven by the industry and the business environment but company processes or the personalities of senior leaders also drive it.  But what does innovation mean for HR? Must it reflect the innovation ethos of the organization it supports? If you are an HR professional supporting a technology start-up, do you also have to be a leader in HR innovation? Conversely, if you are representing a large complex organization that is slower to change, should you, as an HR professional, not try anything new?

HR innovation needs to start with the client’s needs. By listening carefully to clients and identifying and analyzing their specific problems can we only arrive at innovative HR solutions. These solutions may not seem breakthrough for other companies and will not get you, as an HR professional, a showcase of prestigious awards. Innovation in HR calls for an approach that combines two things – simplification and a good dose of common sense.

The game is changing for L&D Leaders. As more businesses shift their strategies to improve their engagement with customers, there is pressure on L&D to integrate and innovate toward greater business impact.  

As VP of Learning & Quality Services at Charter Communications, JP Mula had this very challenge to overcome, as Charter merged with Time Warner Cable and BrightHouse Networks to form a new Fortune 100 company. The resulting new Customer Operations division was comprised of people from different cultures and different business processes, and JP’s remit was to transform his L&D function from an order taker of random acts of training, to an orchestrator of learning journeys for Charter’s agents and reps.  

How to accomplish this incredibly complex task? Learn how JP: 

  • Approached his stakeholders with a problem-solving stance, rather than asking them what they needed;  
  • Gained the credibility and rapport to position his function as the enablers of outcome-based learning 
  • Utilized an “Intrapreneur” approach to help him to secure funding for his “transformational startup” within Customer Operations

Using the acronym ENGAGE, we will explore the many benefits that will accrue in a Mindful Workplace.  We will explore how simple mindfulness practices can help energize, focus, expand and enrich both the employee experience and the company culture.  The six elements in ENGAGE which will be presented are: Energize - Notice - Grow - Act - Give - Enjoy.  In these roundtable sessions, we will explore how these results address current problems you may be addressing, and how you could bring these benefits your workplace and employees.
